Authorized by the State Council of China, the first Chinese Arctic scientific research station, Chinese Arctic Yellow River Station, was founded in July, 2004, at 78o55′N,11o56′E in Ny-Alesund, Spitsbergen Archipelago of Norway. The Station, a two-story building of about 500 m2, includes labs, office, lobby, dormitory, storage, and can support 20-25 persons for scientific research. There have four labs in the station which covers the research field of meteorology and space-earth measuring, glaciology, marine ecosystem, environment and weather pattern in polar region. An observation platform was set up on the rooftop specially for the upper atmospheric physics study. Like the stations set up by other countries around that area, the basic construction work and public service is offered and charged by Norway side. The Station will be a multi-discipline, integrative research base, which will play an important role in improving Chinese arctic scientific research level and enhancing international exchange and cooperation.
